The first seal Seal Observer workshop took place on the 26th of May 2025. The next will take place during the Autumn 2025. Details TBC.
This workshop is run in collaboration with the University of Gothenburg, Slottsskogen Zoo, Swedish Veterinary Agency, Swedish Museum of Natural History, and Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. The workshop is open to anyone who would like to learn more about seals and their importance in the ecosystem as well as help with seal research. The workshop is designed to provide you with fundamental knowledge and skills to become a Seal Observer in your community. Upon completion, you will receive a certificate and be invited to join the Seal Observer network. The aim of the network is to increase knowledge about seals and increase reporting of sick or stranded seals through official channels. Seal Observers will play an important role as an early warning system for changes in the seal population.
Workshop structure
The workshop will include a 2 hour session presented by active seal researchers. Topics covered will include:

Introduction to seals:

Biology & health,

Ecology, &

History

Status and future development of seal populations
-
What to do if you see a seal: how to observe without disturbing and how to report sick or stranded animals

Citizen science and photo-id

Time for questions
The workshop will be given in English however a translator will be on standby if needed for clarification and questions etc. You can receive a summary of the workshop in Swedish.
